50 years of Time Out suspended from the market’s ceiling
The question would normally be “what is a magazine doing hanging from the ceiling of a market?”, but from 27 September to 28 October it will actually be: “what are 50 magazine covers doing hanging from the ceiling of the Time Out Market?”. This September, Time Out turns 50, and the Time Out Market is joining in with the brand’s celebrations with an exhibition of some of the most iconic covers of the magazine that currently has a presence in 108 cities in 39 countries around the world. The ‘Time Out: 50 Years, 50 Covers’ exhibition now on show in the Time Out Market food hall comprises 50 iconic covers selected by the editores of Time Out magazines around the world and the Time Out Market team. These 50 designs will take you on a journey through the history of a brand that began in London in the summer of 1968 under Tony Elliott, and whose development mirrors that of the UK capital from that year until the present day, showing how the magazine become an indispensable guide to London and to the many other cities where it went on to be published. Among the 50 covers is that of very first edition, dated 12 September of 1968, with Andy Warhol’s iconic image of a soup can, which inside featured an exclusive interview with the artist; the 1974 cover that marked the centenary of the birth of Winston Churchill, with his trademark ‘V’ for victory gesture; as well as a more recent one by Banksy. To coincide with the exhibition a shop has been set up in the food hall selling merchandising from it, including T-shirts, A2 and A3 prints, and canvas bags with some of the most iconic Time Out magazine covers, as well as the book.
